Comment Intrinsic Date: kārttika 18 (19?), mahāmāgha saṃvatsara. Basis of dating: intrinsic + reign of Hastin + reign of Śarvanātha. No year is stated in the inscription. Fleet 1888 says candidates are GE 189 and 201, of which 189 is much more likely since Hastin was already reigning in GE 156 (i.e. unlikely to have been around in 201). But Fleet 1890: 228 revises himself (at this time convinced that Uccakalpa rulers used the Kalacuri era, while Parivrājakas used the Gupta era) and has "no doubt whatever" that the correct year is GE 165. Sircar 1959-60c rejects the Kalacuri theory as unlikely and, while expressing no definite opinion about the date of this pillar, observes that known dates range from (GE) 156 to 191 for Hastin (he does not mention IN00092, the Navagrama charter of GE 198), 199 to 209 for his successor Saṃkṣobha, 191 to 214 for Śarvanātha and 174 to 177 for his predecessor Jayanātha, i.e. Hastin is roughly the contemporary of Śarvanātha's father. If both families indeed used GE dates, this leaves a possibility for overlap only near the end of Hastin's and the beginning of Śarvanātha's reign, i.e. GE 189. See also Mirashi 1935-36b for a refutation of (and further references on) the theory of Uccakalpa dates in the Kalacuri era.
