The rock is called Maḍuvegala and lies in the village of Aṁbagasväva in the Divigandahe Kōrale of the Hiriyāḷa Hatpattu, Kuruṇǟgala District. The inscriptions on the rock were first recorded for scholarship as No. 100 in the List of Inscriptions forming Appendix F of H. C. P. Bell’s Archaeological Survey of Ceylon Annual Report for 1911–12.
