Authority | Wickremasinghe, Don Martino de Zilva. (1912-27). ‘No. 31. Dim̆bulā-gala: Mārā-vīdye Rock-Inscription,’ Epigraphia Zeylanica 2, pp. 184-189. |
Details | Located on the roof of a natural cavern in the scarp near the summit of the north-westerly side of Dim̆bulā-gala (referred to in the text as Dum̆bulā-gala), a range of hills about ten miles to the south-east of Poḷonnaruva or sixty miles from Anurādhapura in the same direction. The area was explored by H. C. P. Bell, the Archaeological Commissioner, in September 1897. Having found three caves at the site, he named this one “No. 2” and noted that it “was centuries ago a gal vihāre”. The cave has a wide natural terrace in front, affording a view of the Kandyan hills, and Bell recorded that traces of drawings in black and white were visible on the walls. He observed two inscriptions on the cave roof: an older one consisting of only a few letters and a later and much longer record dating from the 12th century A.D. (IN03095). |
