Details | Discovered in 1929 by Ganapati Sarkar (a Zamindar of Calcutta). Exhibited by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1936, after which it was lent to Majumdar for study. The findspot is Nandapur, on the southern bank of the Ganges about 3 km to the northeast of Surajgarhā in Monghyr district. The plate was attached to the wall of a niche in a dilapidated temple close to a Śiva-liṅga known locally as Burhānāth Mahādev. (Nandapur is not on Google Maps; the Śiva temple may perhaps be at 25.284531, 86.337680 and Surajgarha is at 25.253002, 86.240123.) |
