Details |
A set of two plates, each inscribed on one face only. The plates are smooth, without thickening or raising at the rims. They are fairly thick, but some of the writing shows through on their backs. The plates have a hole at the centre of the upper margin, but the connecting ring and seal are lost. The inscribed faces are presumably 1verso and 2recto, in which case the top of each page faced inward when the plates were opened like a book. |

Details |
Found in 1905 in the possession of a villager in Betul (southern Madhya Pradesh). He did not know when and where the plates came into his family's possession. Hira Lal (1907: 284) emphasises that the villager was of a caste not entitled to accept charitable gifts, so the donee cannot have been his ancestor. The family came to Betul 5 generations before 1905, before which they had lived in Unao, Hoshangabad, Narsinghpur and Nagpur districts of the United Provinces. Hira Lal believes they obtained the plates in Narsinghpur (22.948, 79.195). |
