Object Type Plate
Dimensions:
Width 23.5
Height 17
Depth
Weight 1100
Details A set of two plates, each inscribed on one face only, the second plate slightly smaller. The edges are irregularly thicker than the inscribed surfaces and serve as protective rims. They are fairly thick but deeply engraved, hence their backs were not suitable for writing on. The plates have a hole at the centre of the upper margin, but the connecting ring and seal are lost. The inscribed faces are presumably 1verso and 2recto, in which case the top of each page faced inward when the plates were opened like a book.

Details Found about 1850 (along with other copper plates) in a small receptacle inside a ruined Varāha temple at Kārītalāī (Google Maps 24.053126, 80.706781), about 37 km NE of Katni (aka Mudwara) in Jabalpur District, Madhya Pradesh. Present location not reported; Fleet had borrowed the plates from Cunningham. Hira Lal 1916: 21 also says the plates are "in the possession of General Cunningham" but this may be based only on Fleet.
