Cunningham (ASIR 10: 53-54) gives the cave the number 10; Agrawala calls it Cave 20. The cave is high up in the northwestern end of the hill, about 100 metres beyond the "Amrita Cave." It consists of several rooms separated by walls constructed of stone. According to Cunningham (ibid.) the inscription is on the rock face in one of the northern rooms, while Fleet (Fleet 1888: 258) says it is on a partly natural and partly artificial low arch, leading from the principal room to the next room towards the east. The inscribed area is irregular and apparently not set off from the surface in any way, hence dimensions are recorded for the inscription only. Cunningham (ibid.) also observes that the inscription is damaged at the edges due to chipping of the angular rock surfaces, which seems to imply that it is on the inside of an arch or doorway, through a wall whose thickness is the width of the inscription. Dimensions given above are those of the inscription. |
