Malavalli Inscription of a Kadamba King
Malavalli Inscription of a Kadamba King
The record commences with the salutation to the lord of Maḷapaḷi (jayati bhagavān Maḷapaḷidevaḥ). It states that a certain Kadamba king who was the ruler of Vaijayantī, granted a number of villages for the enjoyment (devabhoga) of the god Maḷapaḷideva. These villages are named as Somapaḷḷi, Koṅginagara, Mariyasā, Karipendūlā, Muccuṇḍī, Kundamuccuṇḍī, Kappennalā, Kundatapuka, Veḷakki, Vegūra, Koṇatapuka, Ekkaṭṭāhāra and Sahalā. It is stated that this grant was previously made by Vaijayantīpati Śivaskandavarman of Mānavya-gotra and Hāritīputra and that the Kadamba king renewed it since the ownership of the estate is said to have been abandoned. The donee was a Brāhmaṇa named Kauśikīputra Nāgadatta of Kauṇḍinya-gotra who belonged to the Koṇḍamāna-kula.
The record has been engraved on the pillar by the engraver Nāgadatta (probably the done himself) on the orders of the king.
