This set of four copper plates was unearthed alongside a second Śālaṅkāyana charter in the village of Kantēru. The plates were secured together with a ring and seal which are both damaged.
The charter records the donation of a piece of land measuring 12 nivartansa in the village of Kuruvāḍa in Kudrahāra vishy to Svāmi Chandra of the Maudgalya gōtra. The donation was made by Nadivarman and was issued from Vēṅgīpura, which has been identified as the modern village of Pedavegi.
The charter was issued on the new moon day.

Comment | Basis for dating: Śālaṅkāyana dynasty, i.e. approximately in the first half of the 5th century. Intrinsic dating: the charter was issued on the new moon day in an unstated regnal year of a king Nandivarman of the Śālaṅkāyana dynasty. It is not clear if the king is Nandivarman I or Nandivarman II. The identification of Nandivarman II is based on the assumption that under this king we find for the first time inscriptions entirely composed in Sanskrit. These plates are in any case the oldest Sanskrit charter of the Śālaṅkāyana corpus. |
