The existence of the inscription rests on the testimony of al-Harawī (d. 1215) who saw it embedded in the walls of a church when he visited Cyprus. It purports to give the text of surā al-Ikhlāṣ (ٱلإخْلَاص).

God the one,

God the eternal,

He did not beget and was not begotten,

And there is none like unto Him.
